2 Screens DLP Digital Projection and Sound. Built in 1915. Operated by Landmark since 1989. On Friday, December 3, 1915, the Downer Theatre opened its doors to the public. It was one of the finest and most modernly equipped motion picture houses in a residential district in the country, making it the prototype for "neighborhood" theatres at the time. It cost nearly $65,000 to build and boasted a seating capacity of 1,200. Music being an important accessory to the motion picture back then, the Downer had not only a Weickhardt pipe organ, but an orchestra as well.

In May 1990, the Downer re-opened its doors to the public after a much-needed facelift. Transformed into a twin-screener, the new Downer was bright and classic, with the auditoriums painted a cream color. The decorative molding was brought back to life with gold leafing and gaslight-type lanterns lined both auditoriums. New carpeting that resembled the original carpeting from 1915 now covers the Downer lobby and theatre floors as well as the partitions on the walls of the auditoriums. Our dedicated cinemas and screening rooms serve as hubs for film screenings, discussions and critical analysis. The UWM Union Cinema (recognized as a Sundance Institute Art House Project theater), the Fine Arts Cinema and the Kenilworth Screening Room provide immersive cinematic experiences, enhancing the educational journey for our students and guests.

The Peck School of the Arts on the UW-Milwaukee campus is a sprawling combination of buildings, each bustling with creative activity. Overlooking Spaights Plaza, the Arts Center’s Theatre, Art and Music buildings are connected by skywalks and hallways. The Music Recital Hall and the Arts Lecture Hall are just steps away, and so is Mitchell Hall, which houses many classrooms, rehearsal studios and labs used by our students. The UWM Student Union is also nearby, providing easy access to campus dining, covered parking and other amenities. Across Kenwood Boulevard, Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, houses the Helen Bader Concert Hall, the main PSOA Box Office and additional learning and performance spaces.

Located about a mile from main campus in the heart of Milwaukee’s East Side neighborhood, the Peck School of the Arts’ creative research facility is a six-floor, 500,000 square foot artists warehouse next door to graduate housing facilities. Offering studio space to students and faculty at an affordable rate, Kenilworth is also home to gallery spaces, a screening room, various installation sites and maker facilities. The popular Jan Serr Studio offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. The neighborhood offers shops, bars, restaurants and movie houses. A campus shuttle makes frequent runs between the UWM main campus and Kenilworth Square East, but many students enjoy the tree-lined route on foot or bike.

A well-equipped undergraduate facility is located in the campus Art building. Three classroom areas with worktables, electric and kick wheels, slab roller and extruder allow exploration of a range of ceramic work. The facility includes a clay mixing room, well-equipped glaze room with spray booth, and a separate mold making area.

The undergraduate facilities house two kiln rooms with four large Bailey downdraft gas kilns ranging from 28-48 cubic feet in capacity, five electric kilns ranging from 7-16 cubic feet in capacity, and a raku kiln. A course in wood firing is offered annually at the university’s collaborative wood kiln site at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Field Station in Dousman, Wisconsin, a short distance west of Milwaukee. The wood kiln is a 120 cubic foot anagama design. The kiln site also includes a small bourry box wood/salt kiln.

Located in Kenilworth Square East, the Immersive Media Lab contains private secured 24/7 access to space for students, research staff and faculty. Currently we conduct immersive research with an array of 3D modeling software from companies like The Foundry UK, Autodesk, Unity, Unreal and Adobe, among many others. We have 2 Oculus (DK2 and CV1+Touch) and one HTC VIVE. Students and researchers can use a dedicated experience computer or a powerful rendering laptop to conduct research. Large displays, multiple projectors and media players, and iPad round out our hardware options at the moment.
