Milwaukee Chinese Culture & Language Services: what do users think?

Kayla Kuo: I started taking Mandarin Chinese classes at the beginning of the year, and it's often a highlight of my week! Shan Lu is an amazing teacher, always coming to class energized. She's so funny, kind, patient and motivational which is exactly the kind of teacher/environment I'm looking for when it comes to learning a new language. It does not feel as daunting with Shan Lu by my side.I appreciate learning about the language itself, but what stands out about these classes is that she also dives into Chinese culture. One of my favorite classes was when we talked about Lunar New Year traditions, learned popular phrases/greetings, and then deep dived into a couple of characters! If you're interested in learning Mandarin, I'd highly recommend Milwaukee Chinese Culture & Language Services!

boris b: Lu 老师 is awesome! Its been a great time learning with her and lots of progress has been made. From day one a lot was accomplished and each class was a step forward. She has provided me a deep understanding of the foundations of the language while keeping it very fun and engaging. What has made it effective for me is her attention to the details and intricacies of the language, while thinking about the big picture and making meaningful connections. Above all she is a very nice and caring person who is attentive to your individual needs and learning goal. Thanks👍🏼

Meilan Wang: I’m currently enrolled in a Chinese language class with my instructor Shan Lu. With each lesson I feel more and more connected with my Chinese heritage. The lessons go well in depth into pronunciation and tones. I highly recommend giving them a try!

alma wildenberg: Our son has been learning Mandarin since he was 4. We started with a different online company. After 2 years, I wanted to find a program who would further his Mandarin learning. So, when we found this company, it was the best decision we made. Our son absolutely loves Mandarin, and now even more since Shan decided to take him as one of her students. Shan is incredibly patient, kind but firm, and extremely encouraging. We love her ability to change up her lessons in order to keep our son engaged the whole hour. Shan's knowledge and passion for the Chinese culture and language has caused our son to help retain and learn this language and culture even better than our current and past online education providers and previous private tutors we have hired in the past.

maria perez: My 6 year old has been taking Chinese classes with Ms. Shan Lu and we are enjoying the journey. Our son has learned so much this past few months. Classes are affordable, creative and lots of fun. We have learned so much about the Chinese culture.Over all we are very content and recommend the services.

Timothy Shawlin: I am currently taking adult Mandarin classes with Shan Lu. I started in August of 2022. I own my own business and have a few clients that speak Mandarin so I thought it'd be great to learn about their culture and at the same time acquire knowledge of a new language. I am very happy with the early results. It's only been a few months, but the different methods Shan Lu implements enables me to learn at a decent pace without feeling overwhelmed. I genuinely look forward to class each week and can't wait to continue learning with Shan Lu!!!!!

Katie Smith: Shan Lu is an amazing mandarin teacher! In addition to explaining the Chinese word and symbol, she also provides a lot of history and cultural facts. Her method of teaching really makes the information easy to remember and understand, especially as a complete beginner to the language. I would highly recommend her class to anyone!

Caroline Bay: I am currently enrolled in private Chinese lessons with Lu老师. I have learned so much and enjoy class every week. I would definitely recommend her to someone who is trying to improve their Chinese or start the language. She is passionate about her classes and has really helped me make sure I reach my full potential.

Ruhama Kordatzky Bahr: . She is compassionate and patient with her students, and has several good techniques for getting the Mandarin to stick in your brain.Shan Lu would often apologize for going slowly at first, but it's akin to a first grader learning math facts. Initially, it is boring and slow

Sidney Cl: Lu 老师 is by far the best. I'm more confident, more knowledgable in the roots of the language, more comfortable, I could go on about this. I'm always excited for class. If you are thinking about learning Mandarin Chinese seriously give Lu 老师 a call or email. She responses quickly and professionally. Trust me, I was nervous going into this at first, I know how you might be nervous joining a class or tutor session. Lu 老师 really helped me feel comfortable. Even when I make mistakes she corrects me without judgment. As time goes by, I am less embarrassed about my mistakes or lack of knowledge because the safe space Lu 老师 creates.Overall, I highly recommend Lu 老师 and her courses!谢谢老师!

Rosa yang: Shan Lu is awesome! I wasn't able to find a Chinese languages teacher the last two years. Even if I did, it was always very far and was expensive. Until I finally found her class and able to meet her in person. She made it possible for me to afford. She made the study easy to learn and understandable. Most challenges was to make your own sentences, I had fun, and really look forward for more of her lessons....

Dan Stern: After working on my own for a long time I found that my skills had stalled and that I was not able to progress from an Elementary to Intermediate level. For me a few consistent problems with tones and some pronunciation was holding me back. In my opinion, these problems can only be overcome through working one-on-one with a good teacher like Shan.Over the past few months the level of my Chinese has improved greatly and I am no longer stuck. She is always prepared and was willing to work with the material that I bring rather than rigidly sticking to a standard textbook.I recommend Shan to anyone who wants to start learning or to anyone looking to improve their level of Chinese.

Alderalda Ademaj: Shan Lu, the Chinese Mandarin teacher is truly a remarkable asset to our childrens lives. She is VERY experienced, has great ways of teaching while keeping the children entertained and focused but above all-the kids want to see her more and more because of the way she interacts with them. She is SO caring and always goes above and beyond bringing new ideas every week we see her for our children to learn. They are learning the language so quickly-all because of Ms. Shan Lu. The children also enjoy doing a new craft project after every lesson they have every week. Not only are they learning a new language, but also new skills. We look forward to watching our children become fluent in Mandarin by working closely with the BEST teacher, Shan Lu. We highly reccommend her!!!

Lily Bembenek: and tasting delicious Chinese celebratory food. She makes learning fun and enjoyable for us, her students. Shan Lu comes highly recommended for any businesses wanting to develop their employees by offering them an opportunity to learn Mandarin.- Lily B.Student, Corporate Language Training Program

Charles Koehler: Shan Lu of Best Translation International is completely dedicated to ensuring her students master Mandarin Chinese. She will patiently work with her students so that they develop excellent pronunciation and the correct rhythm to be well understood while traveling in China. I highly recommend her as a Chinese language tutor and translator.

TheCharles65: Charles Strauss " I really enjoy my Mandarin classes with Shan. Her style of teaching has made me feel very confident in may ability. Shan customizes the program to fit my needs and ability. She provides useful information and valuable insight on the Mandarin language and Chinese culture. Shan is an excellent teacher and one of the kindest people I know. I would recommend Shan to anyone who wants to learn Mandarin Chinese."

Carol Stundtner: have been attending weekly small group youth sessions for several years now. Shan Lu provides a challenging and encouraging classroom environment for the age range of my children. Her instruction is a good mix of language, culture and arts that keep my children interested during class.

Joshua Smith: I am currently taking Shan Lu's Corporate Language Training class for Mandarin and have found her teaching style unique and effective. There is an emphasis on gradually learning characters and the Chinese culture. I have found this particularly useful being new to both. She is also patient with her students and puts in the extra effort to ensure everyone in the class understands the content of a given lesson.

Kun Wang: My two children have been taking classes with Lu Lao Shi for several years. Because they don't have a Chinese speaking environment at home, I was just hoping they learn a few words initially. Much to my surprises, they can read tons of characters now. They even attempted writing! Lu Lao Shi incorporates crafts, songs, stories and fun games in her lessons. The kids like the learning experiences.

Peter Vodak: Business student for the last four years. I have found her teaching of spoken language, characters, and culture to be excellent and I have made great use of the training.

UWM School of Continuing Education: what do users think?

Anne Siegel: Osher rocks! In preparation for teaching a Zoom class to elementary school children in French, I contacted one of the Osher members and received some specialized tools for moving forward with my project. Her 'tips' helped me lead the virtual class with a minimal amount of missteps. I gained a lot of confidence after working individually with Laurie, as well as attending her regular Zoom tutorials for all Osher members. Love the variety of programs, too!

Gwen Benner: Osher at UWM has provided a plethora of stimulating programs for lifelong learners in a community of fellow students who have become colleagues and good friends.

Priscilla Camilli: I have enjoyed many Osher courses. I especially have gained insightsfrom Paula Friedman''s book discussions and Kathy Johnson's film analyses and other courses. I have also been happy to teach classes on art history.Osher makes retirement fulfilling!

Sue Burwell: There is such a wonderful variety of courses offered, and a great way to spend time learning, especially when we can't be together in -person.

Marvin Wiener: The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UWM is an adult learning extension of UW Milwaukee that has brought learning experiences to many intellectually curious senior citizens in the greater Milwaukee area. It differentiates itself from other adult learning activities by the breadth of topics, the active participation in the organization by over 100 volunteers, the caliber of the presenters, and the continued pursuit of excellence through surveys of members and evaluation of the classes offered. The high caliber of the organization is reflected in its rapid adoption of virtual teaching made necessary by the COVID pandemic. The Institute didn't miss a beat in moving to a virtual platform. It has the technical expertise and member dedication to pull that off almost seamlessly. I'm proud to be a member of an organization that recognize me as an individual and values my input and membership.

Chris Schlosser: The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a great way to continue to learn new and interesting things - as well as meet other people. They have done a great job of shifting to all online classes during the pandemic. These classes have been a great way to stay in touch and learn while safer at home.

Cindy Harvey: OSHER Classes have kept me sane during the pandemic!Always something to look forward to. Thank you!

Julie I: For me, one of the best parts of retiring was finally getting to start attending classes with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UWM, otherwise known to the members of our chapter as Osher. I've enjoyed getting together with others for lectures and classes about literature, history, science, and more. Even now, when our meetings are via Zoom, the learning and sharing continues. But I'll admit, I'm looking forward to the day that we can meet, travel, eat, and learn together in person again.

Geri Halaska: Osher has been a life saver for me. I've enjoyed the many classes that I signed up for and have met many interesting people and made more friends. Can't wait for things to return to "normal".

Kathy O: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UWM is OUSTANDING! It offers classes on History, Literature, Art, and even current events. Zoom classes have been offered since the Pandemic arrived along with many other class options. Osher even offers tech classes to learn how to Zoom with a Tech Support Team to offer personalized assistance. You won't regret your decision to become a member!

Tim Peterson: I have learned so much from this place, nothing else like it in SE Wisconsin!!!

Luther Willems: Great facility and staff to help working adults improve their skills! I've enjoyed the classes I have taken here.

Felicia Wilkins: Very helpful in finding resources

Marvin Pineda: This college expects the best out of you when nNo other reality can accept the worst of you. And I mean this when you find yourself the core curriculums you find yourself to work, you will find the workplace safety becomes pinned between a ladder of a few to honors received by none lest it becomes a receptionist to a catering service. – If you’re looking to be a plumber, here’s where to start, because if I was arguing carpentry over metallurgy in such a calm weathered hallway, you’d be screaming acts of God till the trickle point landed on your face with your belly bestowing all the previous laughter you thought you could manage by yourself. You see, I’d be sitting with the Dean, the Staff of Administration, and an S1185 form wondering whether or not to let a blind man walk out with his cane before I found out who ruined my Mother’s marriage and career progression to her children without blood on my knuckles following WI ST. 118.35, and an Honorable Admission of Servitude seeing as my own efforts will linger the halls into a transferable credit of Guiness World Record Readership to a statement that will leave you to question what the Commissioner is going to say about it. – After all, when school is close by, I’m just looking to form my retirement.Want to challenge that signature? Or leave it in chalk? Lifeless? There’s a little more to me than you knew, and a whole much more I circled around when deciding a chance would be glory.-

Abster Asgard: the field you want to be in. This is one of the best places to go.They have an active news station here that lends out thier studio to MATC and if you take that degree you end will work with people who are actively in the feild. They get you hands on with equipment within the 1st 2 weeks consistently and are very accommodating for accessibility. Half these reviews are reviewing the school as a whole... and you should not go here for a school name you should go here for hands on experience. I will say the school body is unhelpful and if you really want help go through you teachers and program heads.

T3LLA: Great school if you’re ready to buckle down and focus! Universities can have a lot going on and be really distracting, but this school has a balance. There’s definitely fun activities every now and then but when it comes to the academics, they will not leave you hanging either. The classroom sizes are reasonable, giving you the chance to have all of your questions heard and answered.

Alexander Salas: My experience in MATC IT Computer Support Specialist program is limited but good so far. I chose to pursue this degree because it lines up well with my current work experience and career goals. So far, I have been able to take all my classes online with no scheduled class times, so I can complete assignments at my own pace without interfering with my work schedule. Another thing this program does well, is that it offers options to achieve many different certifications on your way to a degree. They also work with businesses to help their student get jobs after graduating. I would recommend this program to someone looking to get into IT Support as a career.

Britanni Hildenbrand: I am in my sixth week taking online courses at MATC. I have chosen the IT Support Associate Degree program, for two reasons: One the program is only two years, I’ll be able to launch into the job market faster, and because IT is such a diverse, and fast growing career path, I know I will find a fit into the IT world upon graduation. I chose MATC because MATC is convenient and conventional. I can take classes online, at my own pace, and be on campus for the classes I need more focus and dedication to. This IT program combined with my 10 plus years customer service experience, I know I will be able to reach any career goal I set. Now, while my interest in computers and knack for problem solving I know this career path will be suitable for me, however, to any prospective student looking for a quick money type of career, this program is not for you. This program consists of lots of physical and mental work, also taking consideration of the customers you are serving. If a prospective student welcomes challenges and is comfortable with asking questions and not feeling intimidated by the mass amount of information you will retain then this is a program for you. Prospective students should also be aware that they don’t have to work or figure stuff out alone, one of my favorite accommodations is having access to tutoring, whether online or in person- at all campuses. Fellow future students should also know that acquiring their degree at MATC is a smart money move, students can save thousands of dollars getting their education here, as opposed to a four year college/university. Future students should also know that credits will transfer to a four year college such as MSOE or UWM.

Kipi Guentner: I've worked here for decades after being a student here myself.
