We recently completed our updating from ISO 9001:2008 to 9001:2015. It required a significant amount of work but provided our quality people with a chance to review all of our procedures and develop time saving techniques. The 2 Big changes we noticed were the greater emphasis on using the PDCA cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act) for continuous improvement; and a focus on risk assessment in all phases (both input and output). So what value do we get out of our certification? Does it help us make good parts on time? The common answer is no; it just let’s you keep good track of when you make bad parts… but I really don’t find that to be the case. In our upgrade to the 2015 system we came up with a number of continuous improvement ideas and implemented some new procedures that will limit errors and reduce costs. We’ve shown time and time again that we can provide significant savings to customers who can blanket order their parts and allow us to lock in that pricing long term. So the question is why do so many manufacturers not take advantage of this. My assumption is it has always been risk aversion, but we would like to hear from you.
