Job Description
Facilitates basic communication between clinical staff and clients or patients, which includes parents or guardians. Communication may take place in a medical or community setting, providing interpretation, sight translation and/or simple translation on an AVS. (After Visit Summary).
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Bilingual who speaks, reads and writes proficiently in both native and target language with ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers between patients and medical staff. Ability to shift from one language to another and learn simultaneous or consecutive mode of interpreting.
Completion of Medical Interpreting course to include ethics, medical terminology or proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting. Current course enrollment accepted as long as course completion is within 6 months of hire.
National Certification required. Complete written and oral exams within 2 years of hire. Certification must be maintained.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology used in primary care and dental services through completion of Medical Terminology class or proven linguistic abilities in medical interpreting.
Ability to pass verbal and written proficiency tests at a level of 80%.
Knowledge of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics.
Computer and word processing expertise including MS Word, comfort working in our electronic health record.
Good customer service, communication and listening skills.
Effective organizational skills with attention to detail including ability to prioritize and assess needs.
Ability to multi-task in order to manage interpretation for more than one patient/family at a time.
Additional Posting Description
Hours are Thursday 5:00 pm - 9:30 pm*, Friday 11 am - 9:30 pm* and every other Saturday and Sunday 2:00 pm - 7:30 pm*.
• May need to stay late if there are patients still in clinic.
May be asked to work additional hours to cover for absences/vacations of other interpreters or as volume/need grows.
Work location with be at our new Forest Home clinic located at 15th and Forest Home. Training will be conducted at other Children's sites. Ideal candidate could train Monday - Friday during first shift.
